There is a passage in Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher (Timothy Egan’s beautifully written biography of Edward Curtis
and his lifelong mission to capture the lives of the American Indians) in which Egan talks about how Curtis would spend
night after night in the darkroom dodging, burning and using every other method he knew to get just the photo effects he
wanted. This is the retort to the ill-informed who espouse a “straight out of the camera” gospel.
